Identifying and Supporting Patients with CKD-associated Pruritus
Many patients with CKD experience pruritus (itching) daily, with a significant impact on quality of life. The cause of CKD-related pruritus remains unclear. There are many treatments being employed in an attempt to ameliorate itching, including topical and systemic therapy and non-pharmacologic therapy, but most lack data to support their use. However, there are promising agents in development.
Most patients with CKD-related pruritus have resigned themselves to suffering with the condition and do not communicate about it with healthcare providers. Allied health professionals such as renal nurses, dietitians, and social workers are often a primary resource for patients dealing with pruritus. "Identifying and Supporting Patients with CKD-associated Pruritus” will provide these healthcare professionals with information about the current understanding of CKD-related pruritus cause and treatment, tools to identify patients who may be suffering from CKD-related itch, and strategies to advocate with other healthcare team members for pruritus management in these patients.
Target Audience
The intended audience for this educational activity is renal nurses, dietitians, and social workers who manage patients with chronic kidney disease.
Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this activity, participants will be able to:
- Describe the disease burden, symptom presentation, prevalence and treatment options for CKD-associated pruritus
- Proactively identify patients who may not self-report pruritus
- Advocate for CKD-associated pruritus patients with the patient’s physician and other healthcare team members in order to improve patient quality of life and overall outcomes

Christine Chmielewski, MS, CRNP, ANP-BC, CNN-NP is a nephrology nurse practitioner with Jefferson Renal Associates at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia, Pa. She received her B.S. in nursing from Wilkes College and her M.S. in nursing, with a focus on renal nursing, from Boston University. She earned her post-Master’s certificate as an adult nurse practitioner from Temple University.
She has worked in nephrology nursing for 40 years. She has clinical experience in the areas of multi-organ transplant, dialytic therapies, and all stages of CKD. In her current position as a Nurse Practitioner, she provides care to nephrology patients in both the dialysis setting and the nephrology office.
As an educator, she taught undergraduate nursing at Holy Family University and Temple University in Philadelphia, PA. She has been a guest lecturer for the Acute Care, Primary Care and Family NP programs at Thomas Jefferson University. She is actively involved in nursing continuing education as a presenter at local, regional, and national programs.
As an author, she has authored and co-authored nephrology-related articles, chapters, and case studies.

Sloane Mosley, MSW, LCSWA is a dialysis social worker. She has worked with both home and in center modalities for five years. She moved to North Carolina in 2011. She received her
Undergraduate Degree in Human Services Counseling from Old Dominion University and received her Master’s in Social Work from University of Southern California. She is a part of the
Professional Education Committee with the National Kidney Foundation. Additionally, she has several years of experience in mental health, domestic adoptions and children and families. In her free time, she enjoys spending time with her three children, 2, 7 and 16, and husband.

Melissa Prest, DCN, MS, RDN, CSR, LDN completed her doctorate in clinical nutrition from Rutgers University and her master’s degree in clinical nutrition from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. Her research has focused on quality of life and medical nutrition therapy in persons living with chronic kidney disease or CKD.
For the past twelve years, Dr. Prest has provided medical nutrition therapy to patients with CKD in a variety of settings and is the owner of a private practice and health coaching firm, Kidney
Nutrition Specialists, based in Chicago, IL. Dr. Prest has held many volunteer leadership roles with local, state, and national dietetic groups. She is also a National Media Spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.
